Bungalow Conversion, Flackwell Heath

This was one of the first projects taken on by Nicholls Architecture and Design, and it was a dream job. The owners moved into this detached bungalow with the intention of extending upwards and outwards, adding a couple of bedrooms on, a lot of space, and modernising it throughout.

The house had been extended before, and the result was a rabbit warren of rooms and two front doors which made it inefficient. I sat down with them and we discussed movement through the house and how this could be improved, and what features they would like to see. Through a few sketches and a 3D model, we agreed on a design that would get the most out of their budget, simplify and enhance the circulation space and give them a large, light home to be proud of.

Nicholls Architecture and Design drew up the information for planning which was granted in 2014, and the extension has since been completed. The result is a stunning 3 bedroom home with fantastic views out onto a beautiful and large garden. All the emphasis and grandeur overlooks the garden to the back, while the front was deliberately kept modest in order to fit in with the surrounding houses. The living room flat roof was completely removed and a new pitched roof constructed with impressive full height glazing installed to create a great entertaining space.
